Restorative Yoga from Judith Hanson Lasater

Judith Hanson Lasater, one of the people who popularized Restorative Yoga as well as the author of “Living Your Yoga” and “Relax and Renew,” was interviewed by on the Drishti Point podcast explaining what this type of yoga is. Judith defines it as “the use of props to support the body in poses of comfort and ease to facilitate health, well-being, and relaxation.”  Our culture is so focused on productivity and “doing” rather than “being” which is what the practice of restorative yoga is all about.

Restorative yoga is different than sleep.  Judith makes the point that sometimes we will get a full night’s rest, but still wake up tired.  Most people are in sleep debt which is why intentional rest and relaxation is so important.

Judith also touches on the research studies that she has been a part of including how Restorative Yoga can reduce stress which in turn helps with lowering cholesterol levels and blood pressure.  Finally, she makes a point to say “you can’t be anxious and relaxed at the same time” referencing the benefits those with anxiety have seen.
