Brief Overview of Neurofeedback

  • Neurofeedback, a form of biofeedback, reads the electrical impulses in the brain, provides information in the form of feedback, and the brain uses the information to make the changes it desires to make(i.e. learning to self-regulate better)
  • Symptom based intake
  • Sensors placed on head that read electrical patterns and provide that information to the brain in the form of feedback
  • Feedback to the brain is provided while watching a movie as the screen gets larger and smaller, darker and lighter, and the volume goes up and down
  • Training sessions are 30 minutes in length
  • Minimum of 20 sessions required
  • Side effects are temporary and typically a symptom the trainee has already experienced
  • Treatment can end once goals are met or used in an ongoing manner(regular sessions or “tune-ups”)
  • Works in conjunction with medication
  • Can be used for various symptoms but overall can help stabilize and/or calm the brain, reduce pain, improve focus, and sleep
