Dates: Bi-weekly on Tuesdays

About the Group:
Teenagers that struggle with self-injurious behaviors tend to feel isolated and disconnected from peers. Research has found that teens struggling with such behaviors tend to turn to social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, etc. to connect with others. This can be detrimental to the adolescent, as many social media outlets remain unmonitored and may include material that could hinder, rather than help, the teen.
This group was created to bring teenage females struggling with self-injury together in a structured, therapeutic environment to allow them the opportunity to connect with others in a supportive space, receive psychoeducation on their condition, and learn healthy ways of dealing with stressors in their life in a monitored setting.
The group will be facilitated by Katie Overcash, LCSW and Lynne Beck, LPC. Group sessions occur on a bi-weekly basis on Tuesdays from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM starting. The group will have an open format, meaning that new members can start anytime.
Requirements:
Prior to attending the group for the first session, each attendee’s guardian MUST make verbal contact with one of the therapists and schedule a 30 minute consultation to gauge appropriateness. Katie and Lynne welcome parents to contact them with any questions or concerns they might have.
All attendees are required to have an outside therapist in place in order to attend the group. This allows therapists and parents to know that group members are being supported both inside and outside of the group setting.
Group attendance is required every session unless discussed with one of the therapists prior. In the past, girls who have made the most progress have been highly consistent with group and individual therapy attendance.
Cost & Payment:
Cost is $20 per session. New members must pre-pay for 4 sessions. Each 30 minute consult before beginning and at termination is $30.
Important to Note:
It is important to note that the therapists cannot guarantee that self-injurious behaviors will be completely eliminated; however, every effort will be taken to work with group members to explore and develop healthy coping skills. It is also important to note that therapists will be requesting for group members not to make outside contact with one another while participating in the group, unless a previous connection has been established between members beforehand. The intent of this rule is to assure that all connections made between members are occurring in a monitored therapeutic environment.
